According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Mental Health is defined as “a state of wellbeing in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”
State of wellbeing of an individual depends on physical health and mental health. Physical and Mental health are closely correlated and usually both contributes to each other. In our society Mental health is portrayed as a sensitive topic and is not discussed openly.
College is an important part of a student life where his/her career is determined. It is not an easy path where student just crosses it but it is a stage where new challenges arise, new friends come into life, new tasks are assigned, peer pressure exists along with fun filled activities. Students have to cope up with college activities, personal family issues, societal issues etc. Graduating from a college with colorful result is not a conduit of flowerbed for a student where in, few months ago he/she used to jump to touch the top of the door.
Some students may be stressed up during the tenure and this can gear up and may lead to depression. The symptoms vary and affect individuals differently, some of the common symptoms that need to be watched out are feeling sadness, avoiding friends, tearfulness, hopelessness, weakness, petulance, sleeping problems, lack of interest, lack of confidence, lack of concentration, staying aloof etc.
Everyone should be made aware of significance of mental health from the early age. Priority for mental health need to be given. Individuals should always be encouraged to share their problems with their dear ones and get the support before it is too late. Along with Family and friends, individual should help themselves by observing the behavioral changes and should take necessary help. Society should be educated so that issues related to mental illness should be talked openly , recognized and addressed without being stigmatized.
Physical and mental health both plays a vital role in individuals’ success. Family, friends and educational institutes should endeavor to create safe, sound and inspiring environment that should able to protect and enrich mental health aspects in our younger generations to ensure that they are well equipped for their future.
Serenity of mind is a natural state and is accessible, everyone should have willingness to accept and maintain it.
