Is a multidisciplinary skill demand of today’s corporate world?

A few years back, we were familiar only to the concept of interdisciplinary or interdisciplinary skill sets that means an individual should work on the boundary of his/her educational discipline in the organization or a student should learn interdisciplinary subjects of one domain.  Nowadays the scenery changes and the work culture of the origination/business world also changed.  The multidisciplinary approach came into existed and the management of the organization wants that the employee should capable to work with a multidisciplinary team.

Before, I shall precede the article; we will understand the perception of “interdisciplinary” and multidisciplinary.”  The interdisciplinary means that the person is working with a single area of expertise. For example, in traditional work culture, the person was only able to hand the one task of his area of expertise, and he was unable to work in the other areas. At present, the company prefers to hire the people who possess multiple skill sets or having multidisciplinary working abilities.   On the other hand, the multidisciplinary approach means the people from different disciplines working together, solving the problems, thinking for the betterment and development of the organization by using their skills of expertise together or in a team.  It is known as the multidisciplinary team and multidisciplinary work culture that is a demand of today’s corporate world.

Now, the question arises where an individual should develop the multidisciplinary skill set? Is today’s corporate world training their employees or are individual will learn self for his/her survival? The answer to these questions is very tricky.  The grooming of multidisciplinary skills will start from our education system.  At present the student of any educational background, i.e., Engineering, Management, Commerce, Humanity and Social Science etc. should have multiple subjects’ knowledge or the student should have multidisciplinary courses.

We all are well aware that our education system always tries to incorporate the new and the latest concepts in the curriculum so that budding employee should get groomed, well educated, full of knowledgeability and multidisciplinary. In India there are many Universities, Colleges and Schools provide the multidisciplinary courses which allow students much flexibility to select the course that supports in the fulfillment of their academic and career goals. Online courses provided play a significant role in multidisciplinary studies like “Coursera”, MOOC (massive open online course), NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) and many more.  It provides an opportunity to select from a range of different subjects and allowing a student to learn in different ways.

The multidisciplinary working is often seen as a revolutionary approach at the present business world. The corporate world prefers the team composed of members from two or more departments or different functional areas like Marketing, Finance, Operations, Information Technology, Human Resources, etc. working together to solve a problem or handle a situation that requires knowledge and skills from multiple disciplines. The traditional culture of the organization has been found not to work for the benefit of the broader public interest, but on the other hand the multidisciplinary approach has recently become more popular among some progressive professional bodies that have been very much acquainted with the concept of “working together” or a “team” with multidisciplinary people.

There are many challenges in multidisciplinary teamwork. For example, a person is not only responsible for completing his own allotted task; he must also spend time with interaction, communications, and problem-solving with the other departments. Another challenge for the person is to interact with the different team members come from unique backgrounds.

This study concludes that the multidisciplinary studies or working with the multidisciplinary teams are likely to be better for everyone or the betterment of the organization. In the present competitive world, every individual should be posse multiple skills set, and this is only possible to adopt or enhanced the multidisciplinary approach. We are leaving in the cross board scenarios. The working culture is not limited to the home country. A businessman thinks to expand his business not at national but also international level. The job opportunities extend the international platform. To reach that level, the time comes to become multidisciplinary.

Yes, in the end, I would conclude to say that a multidisciplinary skill is the demand of today’s corporate/business world.

An Implication of Information Technology on Cross Cultural Diversity

To begin with, there must be a decent meaning of the expression “culture” which can be characterized as the acquired qualities, ideas, and methods for living which are shared by individuals of a similar social gathering. The globalization era has transformed the world and international integration has risen from the interchange of world’s outlook, products, ideas, and culture. Learning the cross-cultural diversity has become very important to companies due to the growth of global business, technology, and the Internet. Understanding other countries languages, work culture, socio-political culture etc. are important for any organization that has a diverse workforce or plans on conducting global business. Due to globalization, many MNCs have increased their investments worldwide. The world becomes shrunk day-by-day and the millions of people are getting highly paid jobs across the world. Therefore, the people working in the multinational companies all around the world have become more sensitive to understand the culture and ethnicity of the countries they work in. “Cross-Culture” means adjusting with two or more different cultures. Now- a day’s companies have diversity in their workforce, for that they recruit the number of workmen from different corners of the world. MNCs are doing this because of the availability in skilled labor and higher wages in the local workforce. Learning of cross-culture was initiated a few decades back when firms failed to sustain in the global market. But at that time things were not that as much efficient as compared to now. After the advent of “Information Technology“, learning of the cross-culture became easy and more interpretable compared to the manually written article, because it contains visual, audio and text, and can be converted into one’s own language, as well. The fast evolution of information technology & communication, social networks and mobile platforms is transforming traditional ideas of community and cross-cultural communication, offering new ways to distribute ideas and drive engagement. The information technology tools that help the populace to learn the cross-cultural diversity are:

► Social Media Network
► IT Enable Apps & Devices
► E-Learning Portals

The social media networking is the joint of online communications channels committed to community-based input, interactive, content-sharing, and collaboration. This is a very popular medium among youth professionals to interact and communicate with people across the globe. It also helps in learning the cross-culture diversity.

The social media giving a closer look to the host countries cultural diversity, for example, the Facebook social site is more relevant as compared to other social sites, for the frequent interaction and communication with different types of people to learn their culture. An interaction with people through social media giving a glimpse of the host country customs & traditions and the professional site like LinkedIn helping to understand the host country’s work culture as well as the information posted on it would help in the learning of cultural diversity.

The last few decades have seen spectacular developments in the area of Information Technology. The internet has had an important role in connecting people. It allows people in countries around the world to instantly contact each other through email, chat programs/apps, and video calls, etc. The IT-enabled apps and devices to help the people to connect with their colleagues across the globe and there is readily available software at the company/workplace to provide the cross-cultural training to their employees.

The use of the handheld device and its apps, remove the hindrance in the learning of cross-cultural diversity and the people can learn all the cultural and sub-cultural practices of the host country through IT devices/apps/e-mails. The frequently used gadgets/devices, messenger apps (i.e. what app, etc.), e-mails will support to understand the work culture of the organization.

E-learning is learning operating electronic technologies to access the educational curriculum in the virtual classroom. It is a method where an individual has not attended the traditional classroom and can select a course, program or degree that is delivered completely online. It is defined in many terms like online distance education, computerized electronic learning, online learning and internet learning etc. To learn the cross-culture diversity, the online course plays a vital role. Nowadays because of a shortage of time, people prefer to go through the online course to learn.

The e-learning portals covered all the aspects of cross-cultural diversity, (usually, cultural diversity takes into account language, work culture, social-political, religion, race, orientation, age, and ethnicity, etc.) and also a more relevant portal to understanding the cultural diversity of other countries as compared to classroom coaching. Today, the E-learning apps easily accessible on the devices like mobile, laptop and iPod etc.

The different E-learning portal provides a relevant video/study material and assignment, to learn the cultural diversity. The many MNC’s has made available the training program to learn the cultural diversity of the host country to their employees through an e-learning platform.

The technology is gifted by intellectual humans to the society. The Internet and modern technology have opened up new marketplaces that allow people to promote businesses to new geographic locations and cultures. The social sites where people interact and communicated the mass across the globe and these sites are not only for just a fun, it helps people to learn more. Effective communication, IT apps are used to remove the communication barriers from different cultures and backgrounds. Today’s busy life, there is no time to learn something new. Both the employee and the company use Information Technology to acquire and exchange knowledge on cross-cultural diversity. The companies are providing visual and audio sessions for their employees to learn about different cultures. There is technology integration system to learn the cross-culture diversity, like computers, mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, social media platforms and networks, software applications, the Internet, etc. in daily training & learning practices. The successful technology integration is achieved when the use of technology is: routine and transparent, accessible and readily available for the task at hand, supporting the training goals, and helping the people/employee to effectively understand the cross-cultural diversity.

The people should frequently explore through the Internet. The online environment provides digitized course materials to understand the culture and various tools like Skype allow synchronous communications, while blogs and Twitter can encourage asynchronous interaction.

At last, IT plays an important role to learn and understand the cross-cultural diversity and helps the corporate world to have the ability to view changes in the global markets far faster than they usually do. In this study, I found, that Information Technology someway overcomes the problems to understand and learned the cross-cultural diversity.
